Research Notes:
Michael Hendricks and wife, Elizabeth are buried in Old Section I, Row 36, New
Bethel Eck Church Cemetery. It is interesting, yet sad to note that of eleven
children, ten were girls and three of the girls (all quite young) died within
7 days of each other. It's assumed that a contagious disease or other tragedy
such as a fire took their young lives. [Ref: John Hendricks 12/14/1995]
Michael was a stone mason by trade. He built a two-story stone house near
Eckville along the Hawk Mountain Road near Eckville, Albany Twp, Berks County.
The house, probably built in the 1850's, was subsequently acquired by George
Schroeder, a grandson through Rebecca Hendricks and then Leroy Berkheiser, a
great-great grandson of Michael & Elizabeth. The original stone structure has
been substanially renovated and is now (1994) owned and occupied by Cheryl L.
Robertson and her husband. One of the structures on the property has been
converted into the "Covered Bridge Cottage Gift Shop" and is operated by
Cheryl. The name is derived from the covered bridge spanning the pond adjacent
to the original stone house. The bridge was designed and built by Leroy
Berkheiser and is a photographer's delight! Both Leroy and Sarah Ann
Schroeder Burns (two of Michael's great great grand children) accompanied the
Compiler on a personal tour of the facility in July of 1994. The property
address in 1994 is: RD#2, Box 177, Hawk Mountain Road, Kempton, PA 19529
(phone 215-756-6571). [Ref: John Hendricks 12/14/1995]
Based on information provided by Sarah Ann Schroeder Burns (mentioned above),
Michael's military service apparently included two stints in the army:
According to "Bates History of Penna Volunteer" Volume 5, p 1325, he served as
a soldier in the State Militia of 1863 mustering in on Oct. 16, 1862. The
company was discharged 23 July 1863. Then (also according to "Bates" Volume
4, page 1126) Michael is listed as a member of Company F of the Penna Drafted
Military. It is from this company that Michael is listed as having deserted on
10 Dec 1862 -- source "Microfilm from Military History Institute" (located at
the Army War College, Carlisle Barracks). He was supposedly stationed at Camp
Curtain, near Harrisburg when the desertion occurred. [Ref: John Hendricks
