Research Notes:
Rev [Ref: Holman PILLSBURY p45]
minister of Clappen [Ref: Fiske WHIPPLE p215]
ejected from Clapham, Surrey, son of Lawrence of Springfield, Essex, and
brother of Hercules Arthur. Hercules Arthur purchased the Manor of
Fryers, Bocking, in 1632. This is on Bradford Street on the road to Braintree.
On the death of Hercules Arthur, who must have died without living issue, Rev
John Arthur succeeded him and was in his turn succeeded by his son John in the
occupancy of Fryers. In 1696, John Arthur, son and heir of Rev John, sold the
estate to John Maysent of Bocking, son of John Maysent (one of the Justices in
Finchingfield) by his wife Judith (Pye) Maysent, who was a daughter of Henry
and Margaret (Arthur) Pye, Margaret being a daughter of Lawrence and margaret
(Whipple) Arthur, sister of Hercules and half-sister of Rev John Arthur.
Hence Judith (Pye) Maysent, mother of John Maysent who bought Fryers was a
first cousin of John Arthur who sold it. Rev John Arthur is mentioned in the
will of Francis Bridges of Clapham, Surrey, citizen and salter of London, in
1642 as "Mr John Arthur our now lecturer." [Ref: Holman PILLSBURY p45]
