Research Notes:
HAZEL ELIZABETH BOBO EWING, 93, died December 10, 2009, at her residence. She was born in Kennedy, Alabama, to Leslie Bobo and Elizabeth Howell Bobo, and moved to Memphis at a young age. She had two brothers Howell Bobo and James Bobo, both of whom have pre-deceased her. Hazel graduated from Memphis Central High School in 1934. She and two of her classmates married brothers: Hazel married Joseph Johnston Ewing, Addie Young married Hickman Ewing Sr., and Lucile Doan married Bruce Ewing. Their sister Martha Louise Ewing married J. Neale Payne. Hazel's husband Joe, whom she was married to for 50 years passed from this life December 6, 1988. She is survived by a host of friends, and 10 nephews and nieces on the Ewing side of the family: Hickman Ewing Jr. (Mary), John Ewing, Joe Ewing, Bob Ewing, Pepper Ewing, Maggie Hunter, Neale Payne Jr. (Ann), Jim Payne (Sue), Bobby Ewing (Tootie), and Julia "Cookie" Ewing. She is also survived by a number of cousins on her side of the family, with whom she had a close relationship at different stages of her life; including: Anne Batten (Glen), and her sons: Glen Batten Jr. (Megan), Curt Batten (Caroline), Jon Batten (Jane), Andrew Batten (Stephanie); and cousin Martha Saliba (Mike), and her children: Betsy McKinney (Eric Walton), Palmer Bartlett, Gray Bartlett (Danielle), Hal Bartlett (Bekkah), and Neil Bartlett. Hazel worked as a secretary and administrative assistant for many years, including time at the First National Bank, and then at Holiday Inns in its early years. She primarily worked in the legal department and had the opportunity to interact with many of the early principals in that company. She and her husband Joe spent many wonderful days at their cabin in Hardy, Arkansas. She was a unique individual, possessed of a keen sense of humor. She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Memphis, first joining there in about 1925. She was a longtime worker in the children's Sunday school and also taught in the Laotian ministry. She was a member of the Radio Bible Class and the Baptist Women (WMU). She loved the old hymns of the Christian faith. She was active in the community working with and being a member of the Joy Circle and Gleaners Circle of the King's Daughters and Sons Home, the Assn. for the Preservation of Tennessee Antiquities (or Fontaine House), the Garden Study Club, the Eastwood Home and Garden Club, the China Decorators Club, and the Summit Club. The family would like to thank all her friends and all those who cared for her over the past several years. Visitation will be at Memorial Park beginning at 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 14, 2009, with the funeral service beginning thereafter at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in Memorial Park.
