Research Notes:
Emigrated to Pennsylvania before the Revolution, and was a quarter-master at Valley Forge, 1777-78. He was living at Valley Forge at the close of the war, but afterwards removed to Baltimore, MD, from Baltimore to Carlisle, PA, and from Carlisle to Kentucky. In 1785, he kept a tavern at Lexington, at the sign of the "sheaf of Wheat", it was a two story log-house on Main St, between Upper and Limeston St. There are preserved in the family two tumblers and a bottle that he brought with him from Ireland. Robert McGowan and his wife were buried in their own private burying ground. [Ref: Helm TODD p181]

It is inferred that Robert McGOWAN was a brother of Daniel McGOWAN, the grandfather of Dr. Daniel Steward McGOWAN, who for many years practiced medicine at Fayetteville, Franklin Co, PA. [Ref: Helm TODD p182]
