Lovington Reporter, Friday, 23 Jun 1899:
Henry J. Greer is Dead
Henry J. Greer died at his home on West State street Monday evening at
about 5 o'clock after an illness of nearly seven years. The immediate
cause of his death was heart failure brought on by paralysis and debility
resulting therefrom.
Deceased was born in Sparta, Tenn., on July 3, 1828. He came to Illinois
early in the fifties and lived at Litchfield several years, afterwards
residing in Indiana and Kansas for a time. He came to Lovington with his
family twelve years ago and engaged in the wagon work business until 1892 when
he bought the saw mill then located near the Vandalla depot. He had run the
mill but a short time when he lost a leg by falling against a circular saw.
Owing to his age his injury never completely healed over and required several
amputations. He had been a confirmed invalid since the date of his accident
and had suffered two strokes of paralysis prior to the stroke last April from
which he never recovered. During the past three months deceased displayed most
remarkable vitality. The physicians who attended him and the members of the
family had repeatedly thought, from his condition, that he could not live more
than a few hours, but each time he rallied seemingly by the exertion of his
phenomenal will power.
Besides the wife, six children survive him, all of whom were present at the
last excepting one daughter who lives in Kansas. Funeral services were held at
the family residence Tuesday evening at 3 o'clock, conducted by Eld Parker,
after which the body was interred in the Lovington cemetery.
The surviving children are Mrs Retta Wingate, Della and Charley Greer of
this place, Mrs. Anna Gray of Waynesville, Mrs. Nettie Morris of Fullers
Point, and Mrs. Henry Payton of Ray, Kansas. [Ref: Holly Hogan 1/19/2008]
