(Via Douglas Richardson's Royal Ancestry) Proposed corrections to Complete Peerage (15 volume set, published 1910-1998)
Douglas Richardson published his 5-volume Royal Ancestry series in 2013 and claimed numerous "Discoveries, Corrections, and Additions" (Volume 1 pages xxv-xxix) some of which were additional corrections to CP that had not been posted to the newsgroup/mailing list soc.genealogy.medieval/GEN-MEDIEVAL and discussed. Douglas Richardson's style for citations do not make it easy to verify them. It is not clear how many of these (if any) are truly corrections to CP, and how many of these are mistakes in Royal Ancestry.

CP I p22 Abergavenny XIII 1216 Reynold De Briouze "… He m. 2ndly, 1215, Gwladus Du, da. of Llewelyn ap Iorwerth, Prince of North Wales, by his 2nd wife, Joan, illegit. da. of King John."

RoyalAnc v1p555 Briwerre 4 Grace BRIWERRE "… married (as his 1st wife) Reynold de BREWES (or BREUSE, BRAUSE, BRAOSE), Knt, of Kington, Herefordshire, … He married (2nd) in 1215 Gwladus Ddu of Wales, daughter of Llywelyn ap Iorwerth, Prince of North Wales, by Joan, legitimated daughter of King John of England"

The mother of Gladys DHU is either Joan or Tangwystl, and most sources agree this far. CP++ (Abergavenny) gives both and says no clear contemporary evidence exists. Reitwiesner's article on Joan The Genealogist, vol 1 pp80-95 seems best source. His summary (page 85): WG (Bartrum, Welsh Genealogies) gives Tangwystl, DNB (Distionary of National Biography) says it is unclear, MPW (Roderick, Marriage and Politics in Wales) and Baronage (Paget) give Joan, CP gives Joan, JPW (Walter Lee Sheppard, TAG v35p29-33, et seq) at first gives Joan, but at end of series (particularly TAG v41p122(1965)) gives Tangwystl. I go with Tangwystl.

Margaret's father was correctly identified in Richardson's Plantagenet Ancestry p75.

Agnes wife of Thomas Bardolf (CP I p418 as corrected by XIV p64) "he m. Agnes, perhaps a grandson[bad correction??? maybe should say "a Grandison"](a). He d. 15 Dec 1329." Note(a) revised to say (at end) "seems unlikely to have been da of William Seigneur of Grandison by Blanche of Savoy, as suggested previously. See for example, [ES XI #154]" (but ES XI #154 says nothing about William and wife Blanche of Savoy, and Weis AR7 #257 still says WIlliam & Blanche and cites CP I 418). However, William Grandison, 1st Lord Grandison, had a daughter Agnes, who married John de Northwode (CP IX p756, CP VI p68 (with corr in XIV p348)). It seems very unlikely that there was a second daughter named Agnes, or that Agnes married both John de Northwode (before 1307) and Thomas Bardolf (certainly before 1313). Leaving her as "unknown parentage" seems best.

CP II p61 says John Beaumont m. Catherine dau and heir of Thomas Everingham, of Laxton, Notts. CP II p242 William Botreaux m. Elizabeth, dau of John Beaumont and Katherine dau of Thomas Everingham. CP XIV adds that she (Elizabeth) was living 20 Jul 1415, and no corrections regarding Katherine or Thomas. Adam Everingham, 2nd Lord Everingham, held Laxton, Notts, like Thomas Everingham, father of Katherine did. How did Laxton get to Thomas??? Adam Lord Everingham had three sons (none named Thomas) and three daughters (none named Katherine), and one son (Reginald) survived his father. CP II p132 identifies Joan as daughter of John TALBOT & Maud NEVILLE (XIV p87 adds that Maud was elder daughter and heir of Thomas Neville, Lord Furnival). Brad Verity 9/22/2004 on GEN-MEDIEVAL questions whether she was the daughter of Maud Neville or John's second wife Margaret Beauchamp, but draws no conclusions. RoyalAnc v1p337 and v5p122 and v5p125 makes her daughter of Margaret Beauchamp, but no justification for the CP correction.

Maud was daughter of Thomas Camoys, 3rd Lord Camoys, and Elizabeth Louches. So says CP II p219 (with corr in XIV p98), CP IV p325, and CP VI p318 (with corr in XIV p368). Also says Roskell HoP v2p284 (entry for Sir William Bonville). Also Faris PA2 p37. Also Richardson PA p127 and p240. But then there is Douglas Richardson's GEN-MEDIEVAL posting on 12/23/2006, which raises questions about Maud's parentage, but offers no solutions, and led to no discussion. This was hardly a proposed correction to CP. So no changes.

CP V p290 originally said Hawise was dau of John LeSTRAUNGE of Knockin, Salop, by Joan, 2nd da of Sir Roger de SOMERY, of Dudley, co Worcester. Corrections in XIV p318 changed this to dau of John LESTRAUNGE, 1st Lord Strange of Knokin, by Alienore, da of Eble de MONTZ and widow of Stephen SOMERY [see STRANGE]. Maud, who married Gilbert Earl of Strathearn, was daughter of Roger de TOENI and Constance de BEAUMONT, as given in CP V p373 (with correction in XIV p323); (Prior to the correction, CP V p373 said Maud was daughter of William D'Aubigny). CP XII/1 p381 says Gilbert m(1) Maud d/o William d'Aubigny. This is another inconsistency in CP. The correction to CP V p373 should also have been made to CP XII/1 p381.

Their marriage was on 29 Jun 1544, as given in CP VII p599, and confirmed by Neil Thompson _Ancestry of Charles II_ The Genealogist v1p164. Neil notes that 6 July is often given, following DNB and Fraser, and that 6 July 1544 was the date of the English Naturalization of the Earl. The error is also found in SP and Paget v1p217.

William BEAUCHAMP, Knt … married Elizabeth BRAYBROOKE … Child of William Beauchamp, Knt, by Elizabeth Braybrooke: 1) Richard Beauchamp … He married Ane WROTTESLEY, daughter of Walter Wrottesley, Knt."

CP XI p303 says Anne, widow of Richard Beauchamp, married John Hussey, but gives no parentage for Anne. RoyalAnc v4p416 confirms this part, but calls her Anne d/o Walter Wrottesley. RoyalAnc v4p510 (entry for Margaret St John, wife of Francis Russel, who m2 Bridget Hussey, Bridget Hussey was d/o John Hussey and Anne) Anne wife of John Hussey was d/o George GREY. RoyalAnc v4p416 (entry for William Beauchamp and his children) says Anne, wife of Richard Beauchamp, was d/o Sir Walter WROTTESLEY. These two entries suggest they are different women both named Anne. CP is only source that says widow of Richard Beauchamp married John Hussey (are there others that say this too??). Side note -- Walter WROTTESLEY (#23477) had a daughter Anne (Burke Peerage p2179 and Madan. _The Gresleys or Drakelow_, 1899, p299) who married Anthony St Amand. Same??? Other GEN-MEDIEVAL postings that mention Beauchamp/Hussey: Bridget Hussey d/o Anne Grey, citing BxP 252 and 294; Anne Grey m. John Hussey (lots), citing Leo's Genealogics (Leo has only a single marriage of Anne). No postings that mention both attached to same wife.

No discussion on GEN-MEDIEVAL found.
